Voice data transmission is an important revenue source for mobile communications operators, and Voiceover-LTE (VoLTE) is driving the growth of 4G and 5G LTE voice data transmission. This book applies an innovative multiple stage patent-oriented outcome driven innovation (ODI) approach to explore the potential technology development of VoLTE, potential patent holders and their researching and targeting strategies. According to the result, both Qualcomm Inc. and Intel Corp., promising patent holders, filed and obtained patent grants in the latest years to track the newest VoLTE technologies including handoff and wireless communication networks. Furthermore, Intel depends greatly on Intel-based modem versions of the iPhone, while Qualcomm keeps cooperating with Verizon and Ericsson as technology partners in proving CAT M1 VoLTE technology to explore new star. The research conclusions can benefit the VoLTE related companies such as mobile-telecom service providers, mobile network operators, and terminal equipment manufacturers to accelerate development of patent portfolios for the next generation of voice communications technologies. 語音數據傳輸是移動通信運營商的重要收入來源,而LTE語音(VoLTE)是推動4G和5G LTE 語音數據傳輸發展的關鍵技術。本書採用創新的多階段專利導向成果驅動創新(ODI)方法,探索VoLTE的具潛力發展技術、專利持有人及其研發和目標市場策略。本研究透過採用專利家族與專利被引用數,來確定VoLTE技術的市場滿意度與重要性,從而能確定具有增長潛力的技術領域,並確認具有競爭力的VoLTE專利的持有者。研究步驟包括A.蒐集每個專利權人的專利指標數值、B.建立機會地圖模型、C.確定機會、D.細分市場、E.定義目標戰略。根據研究結果,高通公司和英特爾公司在最近幾年提交並獲得了專利授權,追蹤最新的切換無線通信網絡技術。此外,英特爾市場策略相當依賴於基於英特爾的調製解調器版本的iPhone銷售,而高通公司則繼續與Verizon和愛立信合作,作為技術合作夥伴,預計推升CAT M1VoLTE技術成為技術新星。本書研究結論可以使VoLTE相關公司如移動電信服務提供商,移動網絡運營商和終端設備製造商受益,以加快下一代語音通信技術專利組合的開發。本研究的貢獻在於強化了以專利為基的多階段專利導向成果驅動創新(ODI)方法論,提供給電信運營者一個系統的知識管理方法便是關鍵並具有潛力的技術領域以強化其競爭優勢。

VoLTE’s critical role in the 5G Era

5G networks are projected to reach 1 billion subscribers by 2023, accounting for approximately 20% of the global population. Global Voice over LTE (VoLTE) subscriptions are expected to jump 746% by 2023.VoLTE subscriptions are projected to hit 5.5 billion in 2023, up from the 650 million in 2017. Growth in VoLTE subscriptions is significant as it will become the groundwork for enabling voice calls over 5G access. VoLTE allows users to make calls over an LTE connection, rather than traditional cell networks, thereby supporting stronger, more reliable communications. It also supports richer engagement between users, such as high-definition voice, video calling, rich content sharing within calls, and multi-device compatibility (Ericsson, 2017).

Voice transmission is a key income source for mobile communications operators, and the emergence and acceptance of VoLTE influences the growth of 5G LTE. The first wave of commercially available VoLTE services began in 2014 and will run until at least 2023. To explore the technology leader and leapfrogging of VoLTE, this study proposed an innovative patent-based Outcome-Driven Innovation (ODI) Approach. The patent portfolios of VoLTE leader and leapfrogging are also analyzed by patent trajectories. Then the results and management implications are discussed. The remainder of this paper is organized as follows. Section 2 provides the literature of VoLTE technology. Section 3 describes patent intelligence and proposed patent-based ODI approach. Section 4 shows the patent trajectories and result. Section 5 analyzes the prospective patent holders’ patent portfolios. Section 6 provides the implications of segment market and targeting strategies.
